Milk Thistle has spiny, thistle like leaves with distinctive white markings and is native to the Mediterranean. It has been used in Europe for centuries and traditional uses of this herb include treatment for depression and liver problems. The liver and kidneys are the main organs in the body that are responsible for breaking down and detoxifying potentially harmful toxins and pathogens that are produced or accumulate in the body. The main active constituent isolated in this herb is Silymarin, which consists of three primary Flavono-lignans, Silybin, Silidanin and Silicristin. This product has been standardised by the content of Silybin as it is the most important and beneficial constituent of Silymarin. The seeds and leaves of the herb are commonly used in herbal preparations.
Milk Thistle has been successfully used in Germany to treat jaundice associated with hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. Extensive research in Germany indicates that the active compound, Silymarin, found in the seeds of Milk Thistle has antioxidant properties and protects liver cells by blocking the entrance of harmful toxins in the liver. Silymarin acts through three different mechanisms to protect the liver, it protects the outer membrane of liver cells, it regenerates damaged liver cells and its antioxidant activity prevents free radical oxidation and damage of liver cells.
