Feverfew is a herbaceous perennial with daisy-like flowers and grows widely across Europe and North America. Traditionally this herb has been used to treat fevers, arthritis and other aches and pains. Feverfew is a natural pain reliever with a triple action, it has analgesic action, anti-inflammatory action and also has antipyretic action (lowers temperature). One of the main active constituent isolated from Feverfew is Parthenolides. The leaves of the herb are commonly used in herbal preparations.
Double-blind studies have demonstrated Feverfew’s ability to reduce the severity, duration and frequency of migraine headaches. Feverfew’s well recognised pain relieving actions are primarily associated with its anti-inflammatory activity and regulation of vascular function. It inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators and thereby prevents inflammation of tissue. Feverfew promotes vascular function by regulating the smooth muscle activity of blood vessels and inhibiting platelet aggregation.
