P 5-P is the active co-enzyme form of Vitamin B6, which is part of the water soluble B-Complex and is not stored in the body. Conversion to P-5-P occurs in the liver and requires Riboflavin and Magnesium. People with impaired liver function may have difficulty in converting Vitamin B6 to its co-enzyme form, therefore the P-5-P form would be a preferable way to supplement this vitamin.
Vitamin B6 is converted to its active co-enzyme form, P-5-P, before it is used by the body for the production of red blood cells, release of energy from foods, metabolism of proteins and fats and activation of enzymatic systems. Vitamin B6 helps to maintain a healthy nervous system, brain and immune function and is required for the synthesis of DNA and RNA, which contain the genetic instructions for cell replication and cellular function. Vitamin B6 also maintains cardiovascular health, it prevents levels of the toxic metabolite of methionine, homocysteine, from rising. High levels of this metabolite are linked to cardiac disease and other disorders. Homocysteine is a toxic chemical that attacks the heart muscle and allows the deposition of cholesterol around this muscle, which can lead to arteriosclerosis. Many women supplement Vitamin B6 for premenstrual support as it is required for prostaglandin formation from fatty acids, fluid balance and supports the endocrine system. It is thought to reduce the effects of high oestrogen levels which can be a factor in premenstrual syndrome. Characteristic symptoms of Vitamin B6 deficiency include cracked lips, mouth and gum sores, skin conditions, irritability, depression, fatigue, headaches and impaired growth.

The use of supplemental P-5-P has not been associated with sensory neuropathy in the same way that high doses of Vitamin B6 have been.
