| Product Description |
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring aminomonosaccharide, synthesized by the body from glucose, which plays an important role in normal joint function. Glucosamine is produced within the body; however as individuals age, the capacity of the body to manufacture sufficient levels of glucosamine is reduced. Supplements are the best source of additional glucosamine, since there are no readily accessible food sources of this substance. Commercially available glucosamine supplements are derived from the shells of shrimps, crabs or oysters.
Glucosamine is further utilized within the body to manufacture more complex glycosaminoglycan and proteoglycan molecules, which are necessary for the maintenance and repair of joint cartilage tissue. Joints frequently support the equivalent of six times the body weight in repetitive cycles of movement. The ends of bones are protected from the mechanical damage that might arise from such stress by cartilage, which acts as a shock absorber. As with all tissues, cartilage is subject to the continual turnover (degradation and re-synthesis) of its components. Under normal circumstances a balance is maintained between these processes; however this balance may be disrupted by excessive joint stress, poor diet or ageing, resulting in cartilage damage and subsequent joint disease. Because cartilage does not have its own nerve supply, significant degradation of cartilage may occur before joint pain is felt, by which time a substantial degree of joint damage may have occurred.
