Pycnogenol helps to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system, by reducing high blood pressure, as well as the risk of blood clot formation in blood vessels; pycnogenol inhibits the development of atherosclerosis by preventing oxidation of cholesterol.
Pycnogenol helps to strengthen and seal fragile vein walls, thereby inhibiting the development of symptoms associated with venous insufficiency, swollen legs and ankles, varicose veins, and venous ulceration.
Pycnogenol helps to seal leaking blood capillaries in the eye in individuals suffering micro-bleeding into the retina, a condition particularly associated with diabetes, known as diabetic retinopathy. Pycnogenol inhibits the release of chemical substances within the body responsible for allergy and inflammation.
Pycnogenol is a natural plant extract obtained from the bark of the French Maritime Pine, a tree species which grows exclusively in the south western coastal region of France. Pycnogenol contains a unique combination of substances called flavonoids, a large family of chemical compounds responsible for the yellow, orange and red colours of many fruits and vegetables, which have been found to be of benefit in the diet. Because of the presence of these flavonoids, pycnogenol has powerful antioxidant activity, protecting tissues of the body against the damaging effects of free radicals; in addition pycnogenol has effects on blood circulation and the immune system.
Pycnogenol is a potent antioxidant, with an antioxidant activity approximately fifty times that of vitamin C. Because of the chemical structure of pycnogenol, it can be incorporated into and protect both the aqueous (cytoplasmic) and lipid (cell memrane) phases of cells from damage by free radicals. Pycnogenol is particularly effective in protecting components of the eye against free radical damage. Pycnogenol also promotes increased availability of vitamin C within the body.
Pycnogenol inhibits the degradation of collagen, which is the substance responsible for maintaining the integrity of tendons, ligaments and cartilage, as well as providing the support structure for skin and blood vessels. Pycnogenol decreases capillary permeability and fragility. Pycnogenols help maintain the strength, flexibility and suppleness of skin. Pycnogenols inhibit the release of chemical substances within the body responsible for allergy and inflammation.

There are no reports of significant adverse effects from taking pycnogenol. Mild gastrointestinal disturbance may occasionally occur in susceptible individuals. The toxicity of pycnogenol is extremely low.
